The Crosses of Lafayette
The Crosses of Lafayette, an installation of wooden crosses, Jewish
Stars of David, and Muslim crescents on private property in Lafayette , CA
, represents the number of United States soldiers who have died in Iraq since
the beginning of the war. The goal is to place one cross for each slain soldier-- 4,056 as
of this writing. New crosses will be added as new deaths are reported. The
crosses and other symbols are a memorial to the soldiers who have sacrificed
their lives in the service of our country. The supporters of this project—the
Mt. Diablo Peace & Justice Center, Lamorinda Peace Group , and various
concerned citizens—want to explore the causes of war, find a way to swiftly
end the present conflict, and prevent future wars from ever happening.
